Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage almost 100 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

Reintroducing Fruit & Nut Village!

For those who are new to all things #fruity & #nutty, here are the who, what, where, when, and why of Fruit & Nut Village.

As we steadily approach the management of 100 growing spaces in #Birmingham, we have been reflecting on our origins - or, more appropriately, our 'roots' - ensuring our small charity continues to grow upwards towards the light.

We are grateful to have such a sublime network of #volunteers, helping us tend to and care for the orchards, forest gardens, and other perennial growing sites we have in Stirchley, Balsall Heath, Druids Heath, Billesley, Lozells, and beyond.

16 volunteers keeping busy at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley for our #StartTheWeek session, and still we have much to do!

The winter is well and truly over at #PebbleMill #ForestGarden in #Stirchley. We've been trying our hardest to catch up on the growth of grass in our beds now the #Spring has arrived. Join us next Saturday for another session at this special growing space; there is much to do!

Around 8 months ago we were #BudGrafting at #BullfinchForestGarden in #Stirchley.

Yesterday, we untaped our grafts, and we were rewarded with seeing that many had successfully taken!

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

Charlotte @charley_mwc McDermott is our Communications & Funding Officer. She has worked with non-profit organisations - in the community, environment, and arts sectors - for several years, with previous experience with groups such as The International Society of Arboriculture, Birmingham TreePeople and Calthorpe Residents Society. She is also the Office Manager for @municipaltreeofficers, volunteers for the CAVAT Group, a part of @accessabilityarts, and runs @sandwellpoetslaureate.

Charley holds a Masters in Writing, and when she isn't constructing our bulletins and posters, updating our website and social media, writing press releases and funding applications, she also spends her time writing poetry and performing around the West Midlands and beyond. She attends a few sessions each month, learning new skills, helping with tree planting and pruning workshops, and hosting Summer Solstice and Wassail events.

The plants stole the show at #KingdomForestGarden this #EasterMonday.

Great weather and great company, and the emerging life looks stunning. Have you visited this growing space yet? If not, now is a great time to do so, now that Spring is arriving.

Our newest orchard, planted last week at #BalsallHeathPark with the Friends of Balsall Heath Park! Thank you to everyone who took the time to help us plant this orchard for the community to enjoy.

Forest Garden Planting Workshop

Tuesday 28th April 2026 | 10 am to 12 pm

Join us for some planting with our partners at city farm to grow the village! Equipment provided and session open to all.

Join us today for a special Start The Week Workshop, to plant some more specimens in this large forest garden. There will be plenty of other jobs to work on, and all equipment and refreshments provided.

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

Dr. Rob Tilling has worked in the community food-growing sector for over 20 years. He has spent time at Balsall Heath Jungle, CSV Environment, Let's Grow Together, and The Urban Orchard Project.

Rob has worked within the Fruit & Nut Village charity and precursor organisations since 2017, when the earliest incarnations of the work began to evolve in Stirchley, and currently runs the charity as its Project Coordinator.

Reaside Forest Garden Spring Workshops! #April 2026

Join us at this incredible growing space in #BalsallHeath for our regular #spring #maintenance on Wednesday mornings, #planting, #mulching, #observing...

Most sessions are from 10 am to 12.30 pm, on the 15th, 22nd, and 29th.

There is also a special extra session here on Saturday 25th, 3 am to 5 pm, for those who cannot make the regular weekday sessions.

Reaside can be found between the River Rea and Clevedon Road, opposite our friends at Apna Ghar Day Centre.

#NorthfieldTreasure were busy this winter, filling the gardens of #Northfield with #FruitTrees. We are proud to have been able to support you!

Rain didn't stop our play!

We planted 10 #FruitTrees and #Walnuts with the Friends of Stechford Hall Park in their #orchard, after several of the trees were burned during a fire in the park during the drought last year. It's an incredible feeling, to persevere, creating a beautiful growing space for the community of #Stechford to enjoy.

Thank you for the fantastic catering, and to all the volunteers who came out on a weathering day to get the trees in the ground. 🌳

The new benches we built two weeks ago at #PebbleMill #ForestGarden are working well! And our new information board has now been erected. Exciting times for this special forest garden!

New fruit trees for #BalsallHeath in the #BalsallHeathRoadPark #Orchard.

We planted a new #ForestGarden in Trittiford Mill Park with the @friends_of_trittiford._ on the 27th, and we had such a fantastic day!

It was a great turnout, and our growing spaces in #Billesley continue to grow and will flourish in the years to come. Here we planted some #FruitTrees and #SoftFruit bushes for the community to enjoy.

Thank you to the friends group and all the #volunteers who took part for this special occasion.

Pruning the #HeritageApple and pear trees at the #RoseGardenOrchard in Highbury Park #KingsHeath this week. The trained fruit will need another visit in the summer, but it all looks well for now. Trees grafted from the #ChamberlainPergola.
