Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage almost 100 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

Laura Hackett is the Area Manager for Fruit & Nut Village Druids Heath, where she supports the development and maintenance of our orchards and forest garden sites. She also runs and helps with sessions in our Billesley and Balsall Heath Villages.

With previous experience at @bhambotanicalgardens and @tawsociety, Laura is the co-founder of @beefriendlybrum, a campaign to help protect pollinators by banning harmful pesticide spraying in Birmingham’s public spaces, and co-founder of Brum Faffs-Free and Fair Food Sharing Scheme, a project that aims to bring people together to grow and share produce from their gardens.

Laura also loves poetry, self-published a selection of her poems in 2023, and runs nature connection haiku workshops, one of which she will be holding in May as part of the @urbantreefest at The Green Forest Garden.

A warm welcome from @uobconservation at @unibirmingham on the 20th, working with Grounds Management and student #volunteers to #WinterPrune the #TennisCourtOrchard.

Adding MORE #FruitTrees to #SouthernDriveOrchard in #DruidsHeath last week. Beautiful people under a beautiful sky, as the Spring is now upon us! There is an impressive little collection of trees here now, and everyone should come and visit the site to see the orchard for themselves!

The Spring weather brought lots of volunteers out last week to #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath. We've been #SheetMulching again with our lovely team.

We run sessions and workshops at Reaside every Wednesday mornings from 10am if you'd like to join us! The site is developing rapidly thanks to all the effort put in since its conception, and we couldn't be happier about it.

Our session at Stanhope Wellbeing Hub in #Highgate with @tawsociety saw beautiful blue skies, and plenty of teamwork #pruning the #orchard here!

A lovely outing in #Stirchley last week, to prune and care for our #HeritageApple and pear #FruitTrellis at #PineappleHouse with @dadslaneca.

We've been splitting up some small plants at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley to pass over to #ReasideForestGarden in our #FruitAndNutVillage #BalsallHeath. It's good to share!

More #FruitTreeGrafting on the 19th with #SellyOakTrustSchool in #SellyOak, where we have planted the new trees at #OurFacility with @stans_cafe.

This fantastic new project for a heritage orchard, engaging young people from the local area, has been an absolute dream thus far, and we can't wait to continue our valued partnership work with the incredible people here.

A lovely morning in the sun with @moseleyforukraine last week, planting soft fruit bushes at #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath.

Last year in February, an all-age group of Ukrainian refugees gathered in Fruit & Nut Village's Reaside Forest Garden to plant shrubs, to thank the community that is hosting and supporting them and to promote cultural understanding. Each shrub represents one of Ukraine’s 27 regions, and is labelled with a QR code that points to the Wikipedia page about that region. During these times of turmoil, coming together has never been more important, and we are thankful to have many partners and friends in our Village communities that also share these thoughts and feelings. Thank you to everyone who came and took part in this special session, planting edible perennials and building community cohesion! Nature brings people together.

Our benches at Pebble Mill Forest Garden have finally been installed!

We were lucky with the weather at #PebbleMillPlayingFields #ForestGarden in #SellyParkSouth on 14th March, whilst our masterful team of dedicated #volunteers worked hard to make new #benches for one of our largest and oldest forest gardens. A longer session than planned, but the benches are in and they look wonderful.

This means that not only us and our volunteers, but the general public can now take a seat and take in the views at this beautiful growing space, which we quite obviously highly encourage.

Thank you to everyone who made this happen, we can't wait to have more picnics here, and the seats will definitely enhance our solstice celebrations here in the near future.

At #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath last Wednesday, before the sun and blue skies were lost to cloud, but we made sure we got as many jobs done as we could. Well done team!

We had a beautiful morning in the almost-Spring sunlight, shining down on the Summerfield Orchard in the Edgbaston Reservoir, where we spent a few hours helping and pruning the apple trees with @friendsofedgbastonreservoir and @warmearthbrum.

They needed a lot of work, but it's all worth it to make sure the trees, where planting began in 2015, continued to live their rooty, fruity lives at the reservoir. Thank you to everyone who came!

We completed the #HazelwellRiverbabkOrchard #WinterPruning work last week in our #FruitAndNutVillage #Stirchley. Last time it was rained off, so this is a great result!

@brumunitarians garden looking beautiful and ready to bloom at this time of year. We created this space earlier in the winter, just before Christmas in #Ladywood, and the site is coming along nicely.

We were pruning our #BaseCampOrchard in #WalkersHeathPark last week in our #FruitAndNutVillage #DruidsHeath, ensuring good growth for the year ahead.

A lot of different activities taking place at our #StartTheWeek session at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley this week. #GraftedFamilyTree work, bed edging, weeding, clearing new spaces, and a lot of planning work. We have a big project planned for the 30th March, so join us then!

We've just planted a new #orchard and #ForagingHedge at #StFrancisPrimary in #Bournville. Year 6 certainly know how to work hard!

Thank you @retrofitbalsallheath for including us and some our #FruitTrees at last week's #Iftar at #BalsallHeathChurchCentre in #BalsallHeath. It was such a feel-good, community event, bringing people together from all faiths and backgrounds for special evening together.

Planting fruit trees in #CalthorpePark in #BalsallHeath #orchards last with the wonderful volunteers from @volunteering_bcu! We had a great time and the students receive certificates from @mybcu to add to their portfolios.

We had lots of fun pruning some #SoftFruit last week at #PebbleMill #PlayingFields #ForestGarden, including #Jostaberries and #Gooseberries.

The National Lottery Open Week: 7th – 15th March. All sessions with these dates are dedicated to celebrating the Open Week and our funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

Sunday 8th March – 10 am to 1 pm @ Beilby Road Soft Fruit Garden. Bush Planting Session. Join us today to expand the soft fruit area we began last March, at the corner of the orchard here. University of Birmingham Conservation Volunteers will be joining us for the session - please come along for some planting fun.

Monday 9th March – 9 am to 12 pm @ Kingdom Forest Garden. Start The Week Session. We continue to develop the site, keep paths tidy and weed where necessary. The plants are now bursting into life and it's going to be a busy Spring.

Tuesday 10th March – 10 am to 12 pm @ Base Camp Orchard. Winter Pruning Workshop. All welcome to this workshop where we'll prune the trees in this beautiful orchard. Learn new skills and meet new people!

Wednesday 11th March – 10 am to 12.30 pm @ Reaside Forest Garden. Maintenance Session. An open to all session that we run regularly. Winter work may include tree planting and there will always be a chance to share a hot drink together and perhaps a meal.

Thursday 12th March – 9.30 am to 12 pm @ Hazelwell Riverbank Orchard. Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop. Another chance to learn some basic fruit tree pruning techniques... this session replaces the one we had scheduled in January that was rained off.

Saturday 14th March – 10 am to 1 pm @ Reaside Forest Garden. Soft Fruit Planting Session. Join us and Moseley for Ukraine for a special soft fruit planting workshop at our beautiful Reaside Forest Garden!

Saturday 14th March – 10 am to 2 pm @ Pebble Mill Forest Garden. Seating Installation Workshop. Finally, the day has come to construct some seating for this beautiful forest garden. Our efforts will we thanked for years to come. Please come along to help, especially if you're a bit "handy".
