Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage around 70-80 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

Back for 2026 & bigger than ever! We have a fantastic line up of music, poetry, & dance to get us going, as well as stalls from our partner charities in Birmingham.

We will have a procession to wake up our trees! Please wear warm clothes, bring a torch (no fire), & something to make some noise with!

What a fantastic year we've had with our volunteers this year. It has been utterly jam-packed with planting, pruning, weeding, shearing, edging, clearing, grafting, and celebrating. Thank you to everyone who took part in one of our sessions, workshops, or events, and we hope to see you all - and plenty of new faces - in the new year.

We had pies in our wellies and did some pruning and woodchipping at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley last week. That's it until the #NewYear, join us back here at KFG on the 5th January 2026 to #StartTheWeek and #StartTheYear!

We had an #AlmondIngrid to plant at #HazelwellRiverbankOrchard in #Stirchley last week, including some weeding, pruning, and mulching; the site is now ready for next spring!

Our annual visit to #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley for #FruitTree #WinterPruning was a lovely session as always, where our wonderful volunteers worked hard to keep our trees healthy and thriving.

Planting up our new #EdiblePerennial garden bed with @brumunitarians in
#Ladywood last week, and it looks beautiful planted up with dozens of plants that will continue to grow with our joint care and attention.

No #EdiblePerennials last weekend at #ThePeoplesPlot in #Stirchley... We've been replacing the flooring on our water-harvesting shelter and completing our tool store with some #PalletBreaking and #building! We will be back here in January next year if you'd like to join us at this stunning allotment site.

The Balsall Heath Wassail is back for 2026 and is bigger than ever!

Join us in our procession to wake the trees on Saturday 10th January 2026, from 3 pm to 5 pm. Partnering with @bosfonline, we have a fantastic line-up of musicians to get us going, including The Imps, William William Rogers, and Kate Thompson.

Our procession to wake the trees will start at @saheli_hub, walking through our growing spaces in Calthorpe Park, before we arrive at #ReasideForestGarden. Bring your own toast to adorn the sleepy trees!

Please wear warm clothes, bring a torch or other light source (but no fire and open flames), and something like bells, pots, or instruments to make some noise! It’s time to wake up the sleeping trees during this fun #wassail for all the family.

Wednesday at #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath last week was as wonderful as always with our amazing volunteers, and we'll be back today at 10am and the 17th this month if you'd like to join us before Christmas!

Fruit & Nut Village started as a tiny acorn. We would like to say we are now a mighty oak, reaching further into the corners of Birmingham through our edible perennial food growing community initiatives. We have been lucky enough to be a part of this delightful and insightful booklet created by the @nationaltrust, designed to inspire like-minded groups and spur them into meaningful community action.

It is a beautifully illustrated booklet, 'showcasing eight inspiring stories of grassroots action that also provide practical models that can be replicated or adapted. This is aimed at anyone seeking ideas or motivation to get involved in their community urban tree initiatives or start their own project.'

From tiny acorns is part of a larger National Trust initiative regarding their exCASES mission, Cultivating communities who care for urban trees. 'These resources are designed to offer new insights, audience-specific guidance, inspiring stories and replicable models for seasoned practitioners and community members alike.' We hope that our story and work may inspire others to do the same in their community.

National Trust said, 'Together, these resources demonstrate that expanding the urban forest and working towards greater tree equity is as much about people and their places as it is about the trees. We invite you to explore the research outputs, share them with your networks, and use them in your existing and future work for greener, fairer towns and cities. We’d like to thank all the organisations who got involved in this research project through interviews, collaboration meetings and the participatory workshop. Your generosity in sharing best practice, insights and challenges has been invaluable.'

Come and join us at this beautiful #growing #space for a #maintenance session, where there will be a bit of a mix of working tasks: #pruning, replacing a tree, #weeding, #mulching and generally caring for this little corner of #Stirchley at #RippleRoadOrchard.

Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop!

Sunday 14th December 2025 - 10 am to 2 pm

Our annual pre-Christmas workshop here for some #winter #fruit #tree #pruning at #KingdomForestGarden, to ensure that #apple and #pear crops continue to be as large as they have been in recent years. Come to learn or come to share your skills.

Our morning at #NewlandsRun in #Stirchley saw us replanting a few trees that had suffered water-logging in the past. Weeding, mulching, tying back in and enjoying sandwiches courtesy of @loaf.coop.

People's Plot Rain Shelter Woodworking Session

Saturday 13th December 2025 - 10 am to 2 pm

Today we will be carrying out some #repair work on our rain #shelter, as well as building a wooden tool store. We'll be breaking pallets, measuring and cutting wood, screwing things together and enjoying a day up here together as the #winter sets in. Open to all!

Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop!

Tuesday 2nd December 2025 - 10.30 am to 12 pm

Join us down at @balsallheathcf to carry out this year's #winter #pruning work on the apple and pears. After the session, you can expect a hot, vegetarian meal to be served if you're feeling hungry from all the outdoor work!

We'll be training some fruit at @anawim_bcw in #BalsallHeath this winter with our friends and partners, and the posts went into the ground last week to create a trained fruit tree espalier.

The darkest two months of the year are noticeable as we leave #PebbleMill #PlayingFields #ForestGarden in the dusk, but the #StrawberryTree and #Medlar always cheer us up.
